Yo-Ho-Ho and Some Bottles of Rum

From Blackbeard sipping a cocktail of rum with gunpowder that he would ignite and drink whilst still on fire, to Captain Jack Sparrow dancing around with a bottle on the seas of the Caribbean, (its place of origin); rum always captures the imagination. Its storied history is celebrated every year on World Rum Day (July 13th this year).

Rum’s diversity is one of its most captivating features. Different regions have developed their unique styles, each offering a distinct tasting experience. Bars can benefit from offering a variety of rums. Not only will you cater to different tastes and improve your selection, but you will also demonstrate impressive knowledge to your guests.

Spirit Measures

Here are some of the most common types of rum and how they could be used:

  1. White Rum: Also known as light or silver rum is clear and generally milder in flavour. It’s often used in cocktails like the Mojito and Daiquiri.
  2. Gold Rum: Aged longer than white rum, it has a richer flavour and a golden hue. It’s versatile in both cocktails and cooking.
  3. Dark Rum: Aged in charred barrels, this rum has a deep, rich flavour with notes of caramel, molasses, and spices. It’s often enjoyed neat or in cocktails like the Dark ‘n’ Stormy.
  4. Spiced Rum: Infused with spices and sometimes caramel colouring, spiced rum has a unique flavour profile that includes vanilla, cinnamon, and clove. It’s popular in cocktails like the Spiced Rum Punch.

Ice Cube Trays

5. Añejo Rum: Aged rum, typically for several years, has a smooth, complex flavour. It’s often sipped neat or on the rocks.

6. Overproof Rum: This high-alcohol rum is often used in tiki cocktails and punches. It has a much stronger flavour and higher alcohol content, usually above 50% ABV.

Tiki

It’s always worth thinking about how you can surprise your guests by giving a twist to familiar flavours. Enhance your cocktails with fruit or spice-infused rums. Combine rum with coffee for rich, flavourful drinks. Create bold, exotic tiki-style cocktails with smoked or grilled pineapple. Add rum “caviar” to a Mojito using spherification. Mix Earl Grey tea with white rum for an Earl Grey Rum Punch. Or make a Frozen Watermelon Rum Slush. With such a variety of rums available, there’s so much room for innovation.

Happy World Rum Day!
