Rimming might seem like an insignificant detail, but it deserves care and attention. Rushing rimming can make a cocktail look like a mess. Rimming can, of course, be vital for flavour as well as visual appeal, and provides bartenders with an opportunity to do something interesting.
The Beaumont glass rimmer comes in 3 parts. A part for lime juice, salt, and sugar. The lime juice is squeezed onto a spongey pad. Twist the glass rim around the pad and repeat the process on either the salt or sugar. You should be careful not to press down on the sponge pad in both the juice and coating. This could lead to the rimming ingredients falling into the drink.
There are many options for making things stick to the rim. Water can be used for very fine powders. However, it usually dries too quickly and isn’t sticky enough. Citrus juice is most commonly used but syrups, caramels, chocolate sauces, or marshmallow fluff are great options if you’re feeling creative.
It’s also worth experimenting with different styles. You don’t have to coat the whole rim with every drink and you may even want to coat half the rim with one ingredient and the other half with another. Whilst standard coatings are salt and sugar, you could get creative by using flavoured sugars, powdered chocolate, jelly, or angel delight, cinnamon, or sprinkles. There are endless directions you can take rimming in and it creates exciting possibilities!
