Copper mugs aren’t just gorgeous cocktail containers, they’re essential for getting the most out of certain cocktails. But why is that?
Most famously, Moscow Mules are served in copper mugs. You’ve probably heard cocktail enthusiasts say that these mugs are essential as they produce the best possible experience for our senses. Well, this isn’t just bro science!
Copper oxidises vodka (it makes it react with oxygen) and this elicits a stronger and purer flavour profile. Copper is also a good conductor. It stabilises the temperature and holds the cold in. The handle means that you won’t touch the part holding your drink, keeping it cooler for longer.
These qualities and the mouth-watering visual of water droplets running down the side of these frosted mugs make them perfect for many other cocktails. Here are a couple of recipes to try:
8-10 mint leaves
10-15ml sugar syrup
Optional garnish: mint leaves
- Muddle mint leaves in the syrup
- Pour in bourbon and fill the mug with crushed ice
- Stir the mixture until the copper mug is frosted
- Finish the drink with more crushed ice and mint leaves to garnish
Dark ‘n’ Stormy
60ml dark rum
15ml lime juice
150ml ginger beer
Optional garnish: a slice of lime
- Add ice to the mug
- Combine rum and lime juice in the mug
- Pour on the ginger beer
- Garnish with a slice of lime
Whilst these might be the three most famous copper mug cocktails, there are many others that they’re perfect for. These include Gin and Tonics, Cuba Libres, Margaritas, Mezcals, and Greyhounds. Whatever your drink of choice, Beaumont has the copper mug for you!
