The trend of conscious consumption grows stronger and “NoLo” serves (drinks with no or low alcohol content) are not only becoming more popular and much more varied. The Bacardi Cocktail Trends Report 2024, states that the NoLo sector is set to grow by 67% by 2026. Innovations mean that NoLo drinks are no longer a compromise but a genuine alternative that provides a unique drinking experience.
Dry January is upon us, and whilst some data suggests that the number of participants is slightly down, this is probably explained by the fact that consumers are seeking alcohol-free or low-alcohol cocktails all year round. Bars need to be diligent to thrive during this cultural shift that isn’t slowing down.
Here are some ideas to keep up with the NoLo revolution…
Create Complexity
Don’t just rely on sugary drinks to fill the space left by alcohol. Make drinks that are complex and authentic. Apply the mixology techniques of muddling, shaking, and stirring to create texture and depth. Work with aromas, flavours, and infusions that add value to alcohol-free drinks that mean they aren’t just a poor version of an alcoholic cocktail. Get creative by offering guests the option to customise their non-alcoholic drinks by choosing different flavours, syrups, or garnishes.
Zero-Proof Spirits
Some people want the same experience in their non-alcoholic drinks as they get in their alcoholic drinks. Zero-Proof Spirits mimic alcoholic spirits to achieve the same flavour and complexity. This means that you can create an alcohol-free Aperol spritz, pina colada, or daiquiri and the only thing missing is the alcohol! It’s also always worth providing a selection of non-alcoholic beer and wine.
Preserve the Atmosphere
A joyful and lively atmosphere counts for so much of the feeling of drinking alcohol. This begins with presenting NoLo drinks in the same visually appealing way with herbs, citrus twists, flowers, and everything else. It’s essential to preserve or recreate the social environment that comes with drinking alcohol so that people don’t feel like they are missing anything!
